This new horizon report explores the "Sou.UMinho" program, an innovative, long-term initiative aimed at supporting student success through co-design and distributed leadership across the entire university. Building on a five-year journey of continuous development, the program emphasizes active student participation in shaping their onboarding experience, ensuring that diverse needs are met effectively. Originally, university-led orientation days introduced resources to new students; however, since 2019, a peer-guided approach has been central, with students, staff, and senior management collaboratively planning and delivering activities. This collective effort was formally recognized in 2021 through an induction committee that ensures ongoing stakeholder engagement, fostering shared ownership of the program's evolution.
In 2024, new dimensions were added, and the program was transformed into the current "Sou.UMinho 5.0" initiative was transformed into a comprehensive multiple weekonboarding experience, featuring digital support and ongoing peer guidance. Student associates, trained extensively, provide vital information on campus life, academic expectations, and available support, fostering a welcoming community. These peer guides work closely with student services and maintain continuous digital communication, supporting nearly 2,900 student interactions in 2024 alone. The program exemplifies a sustainable, student-centered approach that leverages shared leadership and co-creation to enhance student belonging and success, marking a significant step forward in institutional efforts to embed partnership at the core of university practice.
